March 6 - Double Whammy
Throughout college, Mackenzie, Christina and I were definitely known as a tight trio. We lived together sophomore and junior year and when someone referred to one of us, the next two names were often on the tip of their tongue.
Kenz and Stina both met their boyfriends freshmen year. It was pretty clear straight off the bat with both of them that these guys were going to stick. That was 2014. Flash forward to 2022 and the guys, in fact, have stuck. Stuck enough, actually, that on Thursday on a Hawaii sunset hike Mackenzie’s now-fiancé proposed and yesterday after dinner, Christina’s took a knee in Whistler. I was completely in the dark with Kenz’s, but with Christina’s I got a text on Thursday night from Adam.
SOS.
I did not have a single doubt about what Adam’s SOS was centered around. He was going to propose. The question was… what was the emergency??
Adam… I cannot handle 2 in one day!
Not today… Saturday. And I’ve been too stealthy. She won’t paint her nails.
I laughed out loud. Of course Christina was too stubborn to do something as simple as painting her nails.
What can I do! I’m in Denver!!
I don’t know.. But any help you can provide I would appreciate.
That night Christina called me to talk through the excitement of Mackenzie’s engagement. Kenz had had an inkling that this might be the trip that her engagement happened - it’s Hawaii, for goodness’ sake - so had texted us a few days prior to go through different nail polish ideas. (We landed on Don’t Bossa Nova Me Around for those who might be wondering.) As we laughed over Mackenzie’s need to be ready for any scenario, I saw my opportunity and took it. Stina, you’re kinda at the point with Adam that you need to be prepared for any trip… Do you think it could happen in Whistler?
She actually laughed. Laughed. As though this were the most ridiculous thing I could possibly say. Larkin. I’m going to be able to smell this engagement coming from a mile away.
Hmm. I guess you’re right. But still. Might as well be prepared for anything. I could just imagine her eye roll.
The conversation moved along and I let it drop. There was absolutely no chance I could push her any further without her raising an eyebrow (something she does expertly). I filled Adam in on just how clueless she was to any future engagement plans and he decided to run out to Target and buy some press-ons just in case. Husband material right there.
Saturday night’s pictures were absolutely breathtaking. The scenery? Incredible. The selfies Mackenzie and I got right after? Precious. Christina’s nails? Beautifully bare. And thankfully she was too happy with the entire situation that I don’t think it was possible for her to care any less.
Today is about 20º here in Denver, so here’s where I’ve been posted up for the majority of my day… the living room.
